Two 27-year-old University of South Florida PhD students from Bangladesh have been missing for almost a week after being seen separately on the same day, campus police say. The University of South Florida Police Department says geography and environmental science doctoral student Zamil Limon was last seen around 9am Thursday at his Tampa home; chemical engineering doctoral student Nahida S. Bristy was spotted about an hour later at the Natural and Environmental Sciences Building on the Tampa campus, NBC News reports.
Relatives say they are dedicated students and it is very unusual for them to miss classes. Police say there are no immigration issues involved and they are not being held by ICE. Zubaer Ahmed, Limon's younger brother in Bangladesh, tells Fox 13 that the family is in "deep pain" amid the "devastating" and "suspicious" situation. "He is a very responsible and punctual person, and that's why the situation is so unpredictable and unusual to us," Ahmed says. Ahmed says his brother and Bristy had discussed getting married at some point in the future, but for now, they are concentrating on their degrees. They "talked about having a future together, but they are not that serious about it," he says.
Police say they decided to appeal to the public for information after several days of investigation failed to find the missing students. "Everybody internally is obviously very concerned, as we are concerned. It's not typical of their behavior, they're graduate students," said USF Public Safety Public Information Officer Larry McKinnon. "We don't have information that there is foul play or suspicious nature at this point." Anyone with information is urged to contact USF Police at (813) 974-2628.
