President Trump has a new makeover target in Washington DC: the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which he's repeatedly blasted as "filthy" and "disgusting looking." The president said he scrapped a proposed $300 million, years-long overhaul in favor of a faster, cheaper fix led by private contractors he contacted himself, NBC News reports. In a video on Truth Social and remarks at the White House, Trump said crews cleaned and re-grouted the granite installed in 1922 and are now adding what he called an "American flag blue" industrial pool coating to the bottom of the pool, on top of its stone flooring, CBS News reports. He said he originally wanted turquoise "like in the Bahamas," the AP reports.
The work, which began after he says a German friend visited and complained about the pool's condition, is expected to take about two weeks and cost between $1.5 million and $2 million, with Trump promising completion well before July 4 and the nation's 250th celebration. The iconic 2,000-foot-long pool, set between the Washington Monument and Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall and central to events including Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, last underwent a major, nearly two-year, $34 million renovation in 2012.
