King Will Carry On With Trip to US, Palace Says

The first state visit of Britain's King Charles to the US is still on for Monday, Buckingham Palace announced, after security officials from the two nations held talks about security in light of the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington, DC. The palace said earlier Sunday that officials are working to determine whether the attack affects plans for the four-day visit in which Charles and Queen Camilla will be hosted by President Trump, the BBC reports. The palace later said the visit "will proceed as planned," per Politico Europe.

The king is "greatly relieved" that Trump, Melania Trump, and other guests were unharmed, the royal staff said. UK ministers had said the visit should proceed once security had been reconsidered, and opposition figures agreed violence should not derail diplomacy, per the BBC. In Washington, the security talks involved officials in the British Embassy and congressional staffs. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer posted on X that "any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms."
