Two people are believed to have died in falls from cruise ships in US waters on consecutive days. Carnival Cruise Line said an unidentified female passenger fatally fell from the balcony of her stateroom aboard the Carnival Firenze on Monday morning, landing on a lower deck while the ship was near Catalina Island off Los Angeles, as part of a cruise to Mexico's Pacific coast, per NBC News. The woman had been traveling with family members, who notified the crew after the fall.
The cruise line said "all appropriate authorities have been alerted," and that law enforcement was expected to board the ship at Catalina Island to investigate. The cause of the fall has not been determined. The incident came a day after a Norwegian Cruise Line crew member fell overboard from the Norwegian Breakaway ship about 12 miles off Cape Cod as the ship was returning to Boston from a week-long cruise to Bermuda, per the New York Post. The fall, occurring around 1:15am, was captured by a security camera. A major search operation has since been called off, per CBS News.
