Monaco Parcel Bomb Suspect Found Shot Dead in Ukraine

The global hunt for a Ukrainian woman accused of staging a parcel bomb attack in Monaco has ended in Ukraine, where authorities say she was found shot dead. Ukraine's security service (SBU) says a body discovered with gunshot wounds to the head was identified as 39-year-old Anastasiia Berezovska, the suspect in a June 29 blast that injured a sanctioned Ukrainian-born tycoon, reportedly real estate magnate Vadym Yermolaiev, along with his partner and 13-year-old son, per the BBC. A former law enforcement officer and a current intelligence officer in Ukraine's Defense Ministry are now accused of killing Berezovska.

According to the SBU, Berezovska returned to Ukraine on Wednesday and was in contact with the two men who investigators link to the Monaco attack, noting they'd repeatedly wired money to Berezovska's accounts, per the BBC. The intelligence officer allegedly confessed to killing her in an act separate from his official duties, with help from another suspect, the SBU said, per the AP. A search of the ex-officer's home allegedly turned up a basement resembling a torture room. Berezovska had previously been the subject of an Interpol red notice and was believed to have fled Monaco through Italy to Germany after the bombing, which prosecutors say she carried out while disguised as a man.
