He Ran Against DeSantis. Now, an Alabama Arrest

Andrew Gillum's political rise in Florida stalled long ago, but the latest headline about him is coming out of Alabama, not the Sunshine State. The former Tallahassee mayor and 2018 Democratic nominee for governor was arrested on Thursday night in Daphne, on multiple drug-related charges, according to online police records reviewed by TMZ. Gillum, who narrowly lost to Ron DeSantis in that governor's race, was booked into the Baldwin County Jail on counts including possession of a dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

WPLG reports that Gillum has since been released from custody. Police haven't yet detailed what prompted the arrest. Gillum has faced scrutiny over drugs before: In 2020, Miami Beach officers found him and another man in a hotel room with prescription pill bottles and small baggies of suspected methamphetamine, though prosecutors declined to file charges, citing insufficient evidence tying the drugs to him. NBC Miami also notes that three years after that, Gillum was acquitted of lying to the FBI in a corruption case involving illegal campaign contributions.
