Google just notched a World Cup win of its own. Alphabet says Google Search hit its highest usage ever during Tuesday's knockout-round thriller, when Argentina stormed back from a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2 against Egypt. "Google Search broke all prior usage records ... right after Argentina scored their winning goal," wrote Nick Fox, who oversees the company's Knowledge and Information unit. A rep told CNBC that Google logged the most queries per second in the service's history.

Top searches after the match included "argentina vs egypt," "how many world cup goals does messi have," and "is it messi's last world cup."
