Air Force Has Bad News for 135 Newly Minted Sergeants

Some airmen just learned they made technical sergeant—and others who thought they did just learned they didn't. The Air Force is yanking 135 promotions after discovering an outdated answer key was used to score this year's Specialty Knowledge Test for the security forces career field, throwing the selection process off. The mistake was only caught after the promotion list went out, reports Fox News, when an Air Force Personnel Center staffer spotted the bad key. The error was "an isolated and highly unprecedented anomaly," officials said Tuesday in a statement, per the Air Force Times.

Officials rescored all 2,285 eligible exams. Result: 451 airmen will keep their new stripes, 135 will lose them, and a different 135 will now be promoted instead. The total number of technical sergeant promotions stays at 586. Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force David R. Wolfe acknowledged the fallout "is going to be hard for everyone impacted," while Lt. Gen. Jefferson O'Donnell stressed that merit-based advancement and integrity demanded the correction. A supplemental promotion list for the newly selected tech sergeants is expected next week, with adjusted line numbers that won't delay their promotions. The Air Force says the error was a one-off human mistake, not an AI issue, and that review procedures are being tightened to prevent a repeat.
