Amid 'Explosive Diarrhea' Parasite, Taco Bells Cut Menu

Some Taco Bell customers are getting tacos with a lot more shell than usual. Multiple locations, including in metro Detroit, have posted notices saying they're temporarily dropping lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and cilantro-onion due to what the signs describe as a "nationwide recall," WWJ reports. The move comes as health officials investigate a surge in cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the cyclospora parasite that can trigger weeks of watery, sometimes "explosive" diarrhea. Nearly 2,000 cases have been reported nationwide, with about half in Michigan, where annual cases typically hover around 50.

It's not clear if Taco Bell is directly linked to any illnesses, reports People, and the source of the contamination hasn't been identified. Officials suspect fresh produce such as salad mixes, herbs like cilantro and basil, berries, or green onions, and are also examining shared distributors and possible water issues in Southeast Michigan. Outbreaks have also been reported in New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Illinois, Colorado, Texas, Florida, and Connecticut. Health agencies recommend thoroughly washing produce and kitchen tools, and cooking raw items when possible. Taco Bell has not publicly commented.
