Lionsgate just moonwalked into a club it had never cracked: the billion-dollar box office tier. Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic from Lionsgate and Universal, has topped $1 billion worldwide after 12 weeks in theaters, the studio's first film to do so and only the second movie of 2026 to hit that mark, after Super Mario Galaxy. It long ago eclipsed Lionsgate's previous top earner, 2013's The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which capped at $865.2 million, notes Deadline.

Produced by Graham King, Michael has surpassed his Bohemian Rhapsody's $911 million haul and now ranks as the highest-grossing biopic ever, reports Variety, edging past Oppenheimer's $975 million global haul. The Antoine Fuqua-directed film now stands at $371.8 million domestic and $629.8 million overseas, boosted late by Japan—where Jackson's fandom is deep—and Russia.
