Supreme Court Justices Amy Coney Barrett and Elena Kagan are heading to Capitol Hill on Tuesday, and they're bringing more than a budget spreadsheet, CNN reports. The pair will make a rare appearance before lawmakers as the judiciary asks for a major boost in security funding—nearly $921 million for protection alone, part of a $9.7 billion discretionary request, and $29 million more than was provided for security last year. Barrett, who has faced a string of threats including a recent swatting incident at her home, is expected to lean on her own experience to argue for more resources to guard judges and their families. She has been known at times to wear a bulletproof vest, USA Today reports. The upgraded security request would increase personal protection for the justices by six agents each, the AP reports.
But members of Congress are reportedly preparing to push well beyond security. Aides say Barrett and Kagan are likely to be grilled on ethics controversies, leak prevention, and even prediction markets tied to the court's work. Barrett's presence is particularly charged after a term in which she backed rulings that blocked former President Trump's bid to end birthright citizenship and impose broad tariffs—breaking with many conservatives even as she has supported him in other major cases, including presidential immunity. Justice appearances before Congress are rare; the last one was in 2019, adding to the scrutiny on what these justices say—and what they don't.
