President Trump's likeness is headed to US coinage—despite a longstanding rule that living people stay off the money, reports CBS News. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on X Wednesday that the US Mint will produce a new $1 gold coin featuring Trump as part of the country's 250th birthday commemorations. "As America commemorates 250 years of independence, the @usmint will begin striking this new $1 gold coin to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and a lasting symbol of patriotism," Bessent wrote.
The move follows a floated—but legally complicated—idea to put Trump on a proposed $250 bill, which would require Congress to change federal law banning living people from appearing on US currency. The administration argues that a 2020 semiquincentennial law gives it leeway on commemorative designs. A bipartisan advisory committee must still sign off, and Treasury hasn't said how many coins will be struck or who can get them. The Hill notes that the coin is the latest effort by the administration to put Trump's name or likeness on a number of things, including the Kennedy Performing Arts Center, US passports, and battleships; new US currency will also be printed with the president's signature, Treasury announced earlier this year.
