A chaotic moment played out inside the Today show studio Thursday morning, but viewers likely had no idea. Around 9am, a man slipped past security at NBC's Rockefeller Plaza studios in New York and lunged at co-host Craig Melvin while shouting racist slurs, sources tell People. In a statement, the NYPD said officers responded to a "disorderly person" at 30 Rockefeller Center and took an unidentified man into custody. "There were no injuries reported," the NYPD said. "The investigation remains ongoing."

The intruder asked for Al Roker after he breached security and confronted Melvin in a restricted area after he was unable to find the longtime weatherman, sources tell TMZ. After the incident, Melvin, Roker, and their co-hosts continued the live broadcast, making no mention of the intrusion.

  • The show later issued a statement on the "security incident," saying an "individual entered an unauthorized area in a vestibule near Studio 1A" and approached Melvin, who alerted security. "Today is cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate the matter," the show said, per Deadline. "NBC and Today take the safety and security of our employees, talent, staff and guests extremely seriously. We are reviewing the incident and our security protocols and remain committed to providing a safe and secure environment for everyone who works at and visits our studios."
