Powerful 7.3 Quake Strikes Off Mexico

A tsunami warning was issued after a Friday morning earthquake in the Pacific off southern Mexico but authorities say the US West Coast is safe. The magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck at 10:48am Eastern in the ocean near the Mexico-Guatemala border, according to the US Geological Survey, which placed the epicenter about 44 miles southwest of Puerto Madero, Mexico. Shaking was felt in Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, CNN reports. Authorities have not yet reported confirmed damage or injuries.

Social media video from Guatemala showed people emptying into the streets as buildings were evacuated, with shaking reported from the country's west coast to Guatemala City. Residents in Mexico's Chiapas state also left structures as the tremor hit. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said waves more than 3 feet above tide level were possible in parts of Mexico and Guatemala, with smaller waves possible down the Pacific coast as far as Peru. The National Weather Service said no tsunami conditions were expected along the coasts of California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, or western Canada, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
