Jeffrey Epstein's name is resurfacing on Capitol Hill, this time with a national security twist. Rep. Jamie Raskin on Thursday announced a new probe into whether the disgraced financier operated as an unregistered foreign agent for multiple governments, reports CNN. In a Monday letter to the Justice and State departments and the intelligence community—addressed to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and DNI nominee Jay Clayton, respectively, per the New Republic—the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee is asking for records that could shed light on Epstein's overseas ties.
Raskin says newly released documents suggest Epstein worked to advance the interests of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, advised Russia, and consulted for an ex-Israeli prime minister, yet never registered under US foreign agent laws. The Hill notes that Epstein "has long come under fire for his significant foreign ties and has been trailed by conspiracy theories he was a spy," including those put out there by Vice President JD Vance, who has suggested Epstein ties to high-level US and Israeli intelligence.
Raskin is pressing the Justice Department to say whether it ever formally examined Epstein's potential foreign-agent role and is seeking any records tied to Epstein's contacts with foreign officials, including within some 2.5 million documents still being withheld by the DOJ, per CNN. With Republicans controlling the House, Raskin's requests may stall for now, but the effort signals how Democrats could wield subpoena power if they win back the majority.
