Arizona Primaries Go Well for Trump Allies

Andy Biggs just landed the GOP's shot at Arizona's governor's office—and a high-stakes rematch over the state's political direction, the New York Times reports. The conservative congressman and close Trump ally won the Republican primary Tuesday, the AP reports, setting up a November face-off with Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs in a state both parties view as crucial. Biggs defeated three rivals, including Rep. David Schweikert, who had argued Republicans needed a more centrist nominee after hard-right picks like Kari Lake lost key statewide races. He was just one of the Trump-allied election deniers to win or perform well Tuesday:

Backed by President Trump and Turning Point USA, Biggs ran a tightly controlled campaign, downplaying his prominent role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election as he pitched plans to scrap Arizona's flat income tax and model the state as "the Florida of the West." Republicans hold a registration edge of about seven percentage points, but recent statewide results suggest ideology matters: voters have repeatedly favored Democrats over more hard-line Republicans. The question now is whether Biggs can unify a party still split between Trump loyalists and the McCain wing—and whether that will be enough to unseat a vulnerable incumbent.
