Alex Murdaugh Listed as SC's No. 4 Tax Debtor

Alex Murdaugh's legal troubles include a hefty bill from the tax man, Fox News reports. South Carolina's latest list of top delinquent taxpayers shows "Murdaugh, Richard" owing more than $1.63 million in unpaid state taxes, penalties, and interest—the fourth-largest individual tab on the current roster. The address given is the same as Murdaugh's former law firm, WIS-TV reports; Richard is his first name. The Department of Revenue says those named have already been the target of repeated letters, calls, and in-person attempts to collect, and all have state tax liens filed against them.

The seven-figure debt surfaces as Murdaugh, a once-prominent Lowcountry attorney, heads toward a new trial over the murders of his wife and son after his 2023 convictions were overturned amid allegations of jury tampering by the court clerk. His defense team, paid a large flat fee years ago, says it will stay on the case through the retrial. Murdaugh is serving 40 years on federal financial convictions, WALB reports.
