President Trump is once again taking shots at LeBron James, this time suggesting that the NBA star might be "a racist" and declaring he'll stick with Michael Jordan. Asked by Fox News' Peter Doocy in the Oval Office whether James is the greatest player ever, Trump replied that he prefers Jordan, noting that they've golfed together and adding, "I only like people that like me, so I would say Michael Jordan all the way," per the Washington Post.
Trump didn't explain why he said "maybe he's a racist" about James; the Post notes that the president himself "has previously faced allegations of racism for mocking James' intelligence." The two men have a long-running feud: James has backed Democrats, including Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and Kamala Harris, while Trump has said of the 41-year-old basketball phenom that he's "not a fan." Trump has also repeatedly riffed on the idea of James becoming a transgender athlete, joking in 2023 about coaching a women's team stocked with James "and four or five other guys" who've transitioned.
In a 2018 interview with CNN, James detailed his own views on the president, who was then in his first term, per the New York Times. "We're in a position right now in America ... where this race thing has taken over because I believe our president is kind of trying to divide us," James said at the time. "What I've noticed over the last few months is that he's [using] sports to kind of divide us." The latest comments came the same day that James announced he'll join the Philadelphia 76ers next season, entering his 24th year in the league.
