Man, 18, Admits Running to Capitol With Shotgun

An 18-year-old from Georgia who sprinted toward the US Capitol on Feb. 17 with a loaded shotgun and body armor, but never made it inside the building, has admitted to federal charges. Court records show Carter Camacho of Smyrna pleaded guilty Monday to illegally possessing a firearm on Capitol grounds and to a separate child pornography charge uncovered after his arrest, CBS News reports. No one was injured at the Capitol. Prosecutors said Camacho told officers he planned to confront lawmakers and "scare them into speaking the truth."

Surveillance footage showed him running toward the Capitol's west side with the shotgun before Capitol Police ordered him to stop; he complied and was arrested. Police said that he was wearing tactical gear and carrying extra ammunition, and that a Kevlar helmet and gas mask were found in his car. Court documents said the shotgun's safety was off, per WJLA. Camacho reportedly said he bought the shotgun days earlier for "home defense" and had considered using it to blow open a Capitol door. He has been held in custody since February and is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 8 in Washington, DC, before US District Judge Amit Mehta.
