Kavinsky, Who Composed Hit From Drive, Dies at 50

French DJ and electronic artist Kavinsky, the mind behind "Nightcall" from the Ryan Gosling movie Drive, has died at 50. A police source told Le Figaro that a stroke is suspected, per the Guardian. Kavinsky had reportedly complained of headaches before being found at home after a neighbor raised the alarm. Paris authorities say an investigation is underway but have found nothing suspicious.

Born Vincent Belorgey, Kavinsky emerged from France's mid-2000s electro scene alongside acts like Justice, building a retro-synth persona inspired by the cinematic style of 1980s tunes. Euronews notes he was a self-taught pianist. The "haunting" tune "Nightcall," as the AP describes it, co-produced with Daft Punk's Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and sung by Lovefoxxx, became his signature track and was performed at the 2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony, per the Guardian. He released two albums: Outrun and Reborn. French President Emmanuel Macron called him "a source of French pride forever."
