As rockets and satellites multiply in orbit, large pieces of space hardware are now plunging back to Earth at a rate of roughly one a week, according to space-tracking officials. The federal government issued nearly 820 reentry alerts last year, up from about 110 a decade earlier, as launches have quadrupled, the New York Times reports. A 2025 European Space Agency report found more than three reentries of intact objects a day, per Gadget Review.
Most debris burns up or falls into oceans but not all: A SpaceX fragment hit a Florida house, a Chinese satellite broke apart over the Canary Islands, and "space balls" have rolled up on Australian beaches. With more than 16,000 satellites aloft and private "megaconstellations" planning hundreds of thousands more, research for the FAA projects that, by 2035, falling debris from SpaceX satellites alone could injure or kill someone about every two years. Regulation hasn't kept pace, the Times notes. UN rules are largely voluntary and decades old; a proposed US rule on satellite disposal was shelved after industry pushback. Liability treaties exist but are clunky to use, as villagers in Kenya learned after a French rocket ring cratered their fields, cracked nearby homes—and, so far, yielded no compensation.
