Night Heat Star Dies at 83

Scott Hylands, the Canadian actor who gave Night Heat its hard-edged heart, has died at 83. Calling him "my forever hero and my best friend," Hylands' son, Luke Hylands, said that he died July 29 on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, after being diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2021. Hylands was best known for playing world-weary Det. Kevin "OB" O'Brien on Night Heat, reports the Hollywood Reporter, a Toronto-shot crime drama that became the first Canadian original series to air simultaneously in the US, often topping Johnny Carson in some markets.

Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, in 1943, Hylands built a long résumé on both sides of the border, from 1969's Daddy's Gone a-Hunting to TV turns on NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Stargate SG-1, and Fargo, notes Deadline. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Veronica, and their two children.
