Rep. Max Miller is seeking reelection in Ohio despite allegations of physical abuse against his former wife and their child. He insists the allegations are bogus, and Ohio voters will decide his fate in November. But one wrinkle in the drama seems to have risen above all others, notes the Washington Post and the Hill: that of the "little blue bunny." It first surfaced courtesy of Sen. Bernie Moreno—father of Miller's ex, Emily Moreno—who accused Miller of holding his granddaughter's beloved plushie hostage for 48 hours. "This girl is crying at night because she can't sleep without her little blue bunny, and his answer is, 'I'm just not going to give it to you,'" said the elder Moreno.
It led to a surreal moment when CNN's Jake Tapper asked Miller, "Did you hold this doll hostage?" Miller replied, "No, Mr. Tapper." The congressman then posted an exchange on X that he says shows his girl got her bunny back in 14 hours, not 48, and chalked it up to a misunderstanding being distorted by his enemies. However, Mother Jones further enflamed the issue by reporting that Miller "has a history of withholding his daughter's blue bunny," based on texts it obtained.
Whatever the truth, the tale has gone viral, sparking a flood of posts from parents about backup stuffed animals and lost loveys. Miller tends not to fare well in these, even after he defended himself on X. "There are literally thousands of fathers reading those tweets and thinking: 'When my daughter lost her favorite toy, I led a search party as if for a downed NATO nuclear warhead. And when that failed, I paid $300 for a replica on eBay,'" wrote David Frum, a former speechwriter for George W. Bush. The gist of coverage is that while Miller is adamant he can survive the controversy over the abuse allegations, the blue bunny may be a different story.
