In Big Wisconsin Race, a Moderate Upsets Left Flank

This time, the establishment candidate won. In Wisconsin's closely watched Democratic primary for governor, David Crowley defeated democratic socialist Francesca Hong and two other rivals, reports the Washington Post. Crowley, who was backed by outgoing Gov. Tony Evers, had been trailing in the polls to Hong ahead of Tuesday's vote. The moderate Milwaukee County executive will now face Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Trump-aligned congressman, in November.

Hong had risen quickly in the polls thanks to strong on-the-ground campaigning and seemed on the cusp of giving the party's left flank a statewide win. But past statements in which she called for the abolishment of Thanksgiving and the defunding of police may have cost her late in the election. Hong had backtracked on them in recent interviews, notes the New York Times. She also had not been embraced by some of the movement's bigger names, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
