Most beach rankings take into account scenery, water quality, sand, etc. This one from the Action Network has a unique twist: It looks at crime. The site crunched data on 500 popular US beaches from CrimeGrade.org on factors such as theft, robbery, vehicle theft, and burglary. It found that most crime is nonviolent property theft—think unattended phones, wallets, and car break-ins—yet the risk varies widely by shoreline. The best and worst, via USA Today:

  2. Folly Beach, South Carolina
  3. Newport Beach, California
  4. Laupahoehoe Beach Park, Hawaii
  5. Devils Punchbowl State Natural Area, Oregon
  6. Santa Monica, California
  7. Grand Lake Beach, Colorado
  8. Van Damme State Park, California
  9. Big Sur, California
  10. Lincoln City, Oregon
