She Was Running Alone When the Bear Attacked

An Alaska runner managed to stop a charging brown bear after it mauled her on a popular Anchorage trail. State wildlife officials say the woman was alone on the Wolverine Bowl Trail near the Prospect Heights trailhead Thursday when the bear attacked; she used bear spray to get the animal away from her, then made it back to the trailhead and was taken to a hospital, per CBS News. Her condition wasn't disclosed.

Biologists interviewed her and examined the area but found no bears, per KTUU. Warning signs are now posted, and officials are urging hikers to stick to open trails, favor routes with good visibility, and carry bear spray—and practice using it. The incident is the latest in a string of recent bear encounters in Alaska, which has one of the country's highest concentrations of brown bears. As Fox News reports, another woman was mauled on an overgrown trail in Anchorage in July. She also survived.
