2 University Cyclists Killed, 7 Hurt During Training Ride

A morning training ride for Milligan University's cycling team ended in tragedy Wednesday in northeast Tennessee, the New York Times reports. Two sophomores, Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers, were killed when a car hit the group of 11 cyclists around 8am on Highway 19 near Simerly Creek Road in Carter County. Nine others were taken to Johnson City Medical Center; seven remained hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon, officials said. Four of those were in critical condition, CBS News reports.

The driver was also hospitalized, and investigators have not yet said what caused the crash. WJHL reports the 69-year-old driver was later booked into jail on two counts of vehicle homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle. Milligan's president, Stephen Waers, urged the campus to come together in prayer and said pastors and counselors are available to students. The Christian university, with about 1,200 students and a cycling team that recently won a national title, sits roughly 11 miles from the crash site.
