A steamy joint practice involving the Dallas Cowboys and New Orleans Saints has cost the teams a combined $1 million. The NFL has fined Dallas and New Orleans $500,000 each after multiple fights broke out during Tuesday's session in California, the league confirmed Thursday. A league spokesperson said in a statement that teams received a memo before training camps began reminding them "of their responsibility in preventing unsportsmanlike behavior at joint practices that has the potential to result in injury," ESPN reports. The brawls erupted on both practice fields after the teams split offense vs. defense, with one player reportedly slammed to the ground, forcing play to be halted several times. Punches were thrown, per NBC Sports.
Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Saints head coach Kellen Moore considered ending the session early but ultimately played it out. The NFL requested practice footage to review for discipline decisions, per ESPN. While the team fines can be appealed, it's not yet known if either club will challenge them. After the practice, Schottenheimer said he'd have "a long conversation" with linebacker Donovan Ezeiruaku, who was involved in one of the scrums. But he then backtracked a bit on the message, per the Guardian. "To be very, very clear, we're not taking (expletive) from anybody, but we also have to have the discipline to not play over the edge and hurt the football team, get penalties, do things like that," he said.
