Rescuers in Wyoming have located a missing Missouri official nearly a week after he set out alone for the state's tallest peak. Authorities say 55-year-old Deputy Attorney General Shaun Mackelprang was found alive Wednesday near remote Scott Lake in the Wind River Range, six days after he failed to return from an attempted summit of Gannett Peak, CBS News reports. Search teams on foot, assisted by drones and aircraft, focused on the rugged Bridger-Teton National Forest area after finding his vehicle at the Green River Lake trailhead.
He was airlifted out by helicopter after he was found weak but alert, KY3 reports. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway said the office is "beyond grateful" to rescuers and the public. Mackelprang's brother told Cowboy State Daily he believes Mackelprang reached the summit but became dehydrated and confused amid bad weather on the way down, ending up at the wrong lake. "They found him wandering at a lake that probably looks similar to the one that his tent was pitched at," Romel Mackelprang said. "We don't know."
The Sublette County Sheriff's Office thanked "the public and backcountry users who shared information, reviewed photographs and GPS data, shared the missing-person information, and helped get the word out." Romel Mackelprang praised the "phenomenal" efforts of the professionals and volunteers who searched for his brother. "If ever you wonder about the goodness of people, you don't have to go beyond the people up there in your community because they have saved my brother's life," he said. He said his brother has been trying to reach the highest point in all 50 states, with Wyoming No. 45.
