President Trump is now calling it Lake America. Canada is sticking with Lake Ontario. The political fracas over what to call the Great Lake even played out on Wikipedia Thursday, reports Gizmodo. After Trump signed an executive order bestowing the "Lake America" name, his supporters swarmed the site's entry for the lake, repeatedly trying to swap in the new name and arguing in the Talk section that the change was already official. In the end, however, editors left the original name intact while adding a section noting Trump's order.
The move echoes Trump's 2025 rebranding of the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America," a name big tech maps adopted even as Wikipedia did not. It's not yet clear how Google and Apple will handle the lake controversy on their maps, but, as they did with the Gulf of America, both are expected to wait for the Geographic Names Information System of America to formally update before making any changes, per Tech Times. MapQuest, meanwhile, announced "we're not changing it" on social media, notes Business Insider. The move prompted a rejoinder from Eric Trump, who wrote: "Shocking to see you're still alive. I thought the iPhone 3 took you out 15 years ago."
