A Canadian crowd turned a 1993 song into a pointed message over the weekend. During Blue Rodeo's Saturday show at Toronto's RBC Amphitheatre, Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor asked 16,000 fans to sing the words "Lake Ontario" from their song "Hasn't Hit Me Yet" with "full authority and ownership." The move was not-so-subtly aimed at President Trump's move to rebrand the lake as "Lake America" amid a trade impasse. "It was really strong, with people throwing their arms in the air," Cuddy tells the Toronto Star. "I was really glad we had the opportunity to have people yell out, 'Lake Ontario.' It's so specific to this idiotic action by the president. It was a thrilling, moving moment—a good protest."
The moment, set against a giant map of Lake Ontario, went viral and, Cuddy says, tapped into simmering frustrations over the Trump administration's rhetoric toward Canada. The band, which has stopped playing in the US since Trump's re-election, framed the singalong as an affirmation of Canadian identity. "There is an amazing amount of pent-up tension with people because of the insults and the demeaning comments that are about our country—and having very few outlets to respond to it," says Cuddy. "Now, finally, there's something to yell to the skies, like, 'what the heck is going on?'" Cuddy expects the "Lake Ontario" shout to stick in their live shows "for the next year, at least." "We're not pushovers. We dig in," Keelor tells CTV.
