A bankruptcy trial in Denver over nearly $12 million owed by Shilo Sanders took a startling turn on Thursday when the man he's battling in court was taken away by ambulance. John Darjean, a 50-year-old former school security guard who won an $11.89 million default judgment after accusing Sanders, son of football star Deion, of assaulting him at a Dallas school in 2015, collapsed in apparent pain after more than two hours on the stand, reports USA Today. Darjean, who the Denver Post notes had told the court that morning that he was suffering from bad back pain, was released from the hospital later in the day.
Per a 2024 filing, Darjean said he'd sustained "severe and permanent injuries including a broken neck, damage to his cervical spine, permanent neurological injuries, and irreversible incontinence" as a result of the alleged assault, per Westword. Thursday's testimony also undercut a key witness for Sanders: a school administrator who told the court she saw Darjean choking Sanders but was confronted with an old phone recording in which she said she hadn't seen that, per USA Today.
Police and medical records from that time period largely supported Darjean's account. Sanders is asking the judge to wipe out the debt in bankruptcy, while Darjean argues the injury was intentional and must stand. Meanwhile, a judge has decided that Deion Sanders won't have to testify in his son's case, reports USA Today.
