EU Delivers Boost to Greenland

Europe is shoring up Greenland as President Trump presses his campaign to take control of the island. During a visit, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Monday unveiled a $232 million package for Greenland, saying it underscores its decision to deepen ties with the EU rather than the US, CNBC reports. Standing with the prime ministers of Greenland and Denmark, von der Leyen praised Greenland as a "strategic ally and a trusted friend" that has "stood firm" under intense pressure over its future. The funds, to be spent this year and in 2027, target what she called the "three Cs": better connections, clean energy projects, and access to critical minerals.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the sustained pressure but stressed that Copenhagen wants to cooperate with the US and Europe—while "working even closer" with EU partners in the Arctic. A US-Denmark-Greenland working group is already exploring what Trump has described as a framework for a future deal over the vast, mineral-rich island. "Greenland's future is for the people of Greenland and Denmark to decide. No one else," von der Leyen said, per the AP. Greenland is a semiautonomous territory of Denmark. After signing an EU-Greenland declaration with Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen, von der Leyen said, "Greenland can count on the EU."
