A parent-teacher confrontation in a small French village ended with a prison sentence. A 47-year-old father was jailed for six months after threatening to behead a primary school teacher who had disciplined his son in Le Fauga, near Toulouse, reports the BBC. The teacher, in her 50s, is now on sick leave and under official protection. The judge in the case cited the 2020 beheading of teacher Samuel Paty in France as a chilling backdrop.
In this case, authorities say the man had been called to the school to discuss his child's disruptive behavior. He allegedly confronted the teacher later outside the school and issued the threat. The man's attorney asked the judge to sentence him as a concerned father without "taking his Muslim religious beliefs into account," per AFP. The judge also ordered the man—who apologized at the hearing—to complete a citizenship course and to stay away from the teacher and school when he's out of jail. The case is one of the first to make use of a new French law designed to shield educators from aggressive parents.
