China's breakout teen in the pool just added another line to her résumé. Thirteen-year-old Yu Zidi grabbed a gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley at the Asian Games in Tokyo on Monday, with a Games-record 2:06.10—less than half a second off Canadian Summer McIntosh's world record, reports the BBC. It was Yu's second gold medal in two days: She claimed her first of the games in the 200-meter butterfly on Sunday with a time of 2:05.08, though she said she was "happier with the second gold medal than the first."
She's no stranger to early success: at 12, she became the youngest swimmer to medal at the World Championships, taking home a bronze as part of China's 4x200 freestyle relay. Her star rose earlier this year when she beat US star Regan Smith, the reigning Olympic silver medalist, in the 200-meter fly. The sport is now eyeing a looming rivalry between Yu and McIntosh, who also holds world records in the 200-meter fly (2:01.65) and 400-meter individual medley (4:23.65), per the AP. Yu will swim in that latter event later this week.
