Evacuation orders for nearly 2 million people were in place Monday as a powerful typhoon closed in on Japan's Pacific coast. Typhoon Dujuan was expected to pass near the Tokyo area, with authorities warning of intense rain, strong winds, flash floods, and landslides across the wider Kanto region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, per Reuters. Numerous cities have reported record-breaking rainfall over the past 24 hours, with six receiving more than a foot, per the BBC.
There have been reports of major flooding across the region, per USA Today. One woman is believed to have been buried alive in a landslide in Kanagawa prefecture, the BBC reports, noting the extent of damage likely won't be known until Tuesday morning local time. The storm also disrupted events at the Asian Games in Aichi on Monday, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's flight to New York for the UN General Assembly was delayed by four hours. Another 400 flights were canceled. Heavy rain is expected into Tuesday evening.
