One of the two men critically injured in the 2024 rally shooting that targeted President Trump has died. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said Moon Township, Pennsylvania resident James Copenhaver, 76, died in a Pittsburgh hospital on Wednesday, the Beaver County Times reports. No cause of death was released.
- "We are deeply saddened by the passing of Jim Copenhaver, who was gravely wounded in the horrific shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania," House Republicans said on X. "Jim endured unimaginable hardship with strength and perseverance. We join his family and loved ones in mourning his loss and praying for them during this difficult time. May he rest in peace."
Copenhaver was hit twice during the July 13, 2024, campaign event, suffering serious internal injuries and nerve damage. He spent around two weeks in the hospital before being released. Another attendee, then-57-year-old David Dutch, was also wounded that day, and 50-year-old firefighter Corey Comperatore was killed. Secret Service killed Thomas Crooks, the 20-year-old gunman.
- Copenhaver and Dutch spoke to KDKA a year after the shooting, recounting the chaos as shots rang out at the rally. I was standing up looking at the Jumbotron behind me, and next thing I know my sleeve has been yanked," Copenhaver said. "I could see a portion of it going by pretty fast, and I heard 'pew.' I heard it, and I didn't realize at the time that I had gotten shot. But I turned around, and that's when I got the second shot. So, the second shot didn't hit bone. Mine went into all soft material. It was like a jolt. It didn't knock me over, but I didn't want to stand anymore."
- Copenhaver said a bullet that went through his colon was still lodged in his body. He said he had undergone multiple surgeries to repair the damage. "Unfortunately, it's lodged right next to my spine and hit a nerve," he said. Copenhaver said he struggled with tasks like putting on his shoes but had started physical therapy. "We are not going to give up," he said.
