One Fort Lauderdale home had two crane accidents in a single day, though no one inside was hurt either time. Fire officials say the first mishap happened around 9:15am on Thursday, when a crane and its truck tipped onto a house on Southeast 8th Street, damaging the roof and back wall, per NBC Miami. Hours later, as crews used a second crane to lift the first one off the structure, that crane also toppled onto the same home; CBS Miami has some video and pics.
A hazmat team responded to contain a diesel fuel leak, and city inspectors were called in to assess structural safety, per NBC. The house was reportedly under construction. Cooper Crane, which owns at least one of the cranes at the site, said it's cooperating with authorities, the homeowner, and its insurer and is reviewing what went wrong.
The homeowner, meanwhile, says their family won't be moving into the residence anytime soon due to roof and water damage, per WSVN. "My heart goes out to him right now, and his family, because they were just so excited to move into this house," a neighbor tells the outlet. "Now they have to deal with this tragedy just because somebody wasn't really paying attention and doing what they needed to do."
