A Northern California couple is recuperating from injuries they received in a bear attack—and mourning their dog. Jeff and Mallory Wilson, who run the off-grid Radio Ranch Camp in rural Trinity County, were injured in the attack on Sept. 19, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. The couple says Jeff went outside with their French bulldog, Cassie, early in the morning when the bear attacked. The dog then got between Jeff and the bear, suffering injuries that proved fatal two days later, per USA Today.
Mallory, awakened by the commotion, ran outside and received wounds to her head and face while helping Jeff escape. He sustained broken ribs and multiple bites and claw marks, according to an online fundraiser organized by a friend. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is investigating, and the Wilsons have halted reservations at their glamping retreat as they recover.
