Cristiano Ronaldo packed his bags and left Portugal's camp in Copenhagen on Wednesday, injecting fresh uncertainty into one of international soccer's longest-running careers. The 41-year-old exited a day before Portugal faces Denmark in the Nations League, shortly after coach Jorge Jesus acknowledged friction between them, Reuters reports. On Instagram, Ronaldo said he made the decision after Jesus' news conference and a talk with Portuguese Football Federation chief Pedro Proenca, promising to "tell all Portuguese people the truth" about his decision later.
The episode is an early stress test for Jesus, who's just two games into the job after replacing Roberto Martinez. Ronaldo, Portugal's all-time leader in goals (146) and appearances (234), had been left on the bench in Sunday's win over Norway and trained separately in the days since. Jesus insisted there was no bust-up and called it "impossible" that Ronaldo refused to train, while acknowledging the star was angry over recent decisions. "Now is the time to wish Portugal and all my teammates good luck," the star posted, per ESPN, "without exception."
