A New York Times Games engineer was fatally shot in a Bay Area parking lot, and prosecutors say his in-laws carried out the attack while the victim and their daughter were in the midst of a contentious divorce, the Guardian reports. Authorities on Wednesday charged 77-year-olds Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen with murder, alleging they took turns shooting 40-year-old Jonathan McKinsey on Saturday in a busy Dublin, California, park area before being stopped while driving away. Per SFGate, McKinsey was killed in broad daylight in a crowded parking lot, where several children were present.

Prosecutors say Zhang later admitted to the shooting and that a gun recovered from his car was used in the killing. The charges include a special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait, which could mean life in prison without parole if they're convicted. McKinsey's death came amid a bitter divorce and custody dispute with wife Candice Jang; he had accused her and her parents of abuse related to his gender transition, which he underwent years prior. She had also accused him of abuse, and he was facing misdemeanor charges of alleged child endangerment and corporal injury to a child when he died. The couple wed in 2011 and shared three young children. McKinsey was killed days before a scheduled hearing in the divorce, the AP reports.
