A $100,000 credit card bill is at the center of an investigation into US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. The State Department's inspector general has opened a probe after Eric Deters, a legal consultant and longtime Trump ally, alleged that Guilfoyle asked him to pay off her American Express balance before her 2025 confirmation hearing in return for access to top administration officials, reports NBC News. Deters shared what he says are text and Signal messages showing Guilfoyle, who was once engaged to Donald Trump Jr., urging him to wire the money directly to AmEx so it "won't show up anywhere"; he says he never paid. However, "no question it was a quid pro quo," he told CNN.
Guilfoyle's attorney has questioned the authenticity of the messages but hasn't provided details, per NBC. Vice President JD Vance called the claims "one person's story" and urged waiting for evidence. Earlier in the week, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who was actually in Greece, also stayed relatively mum on the matter, telling reporters, per the AP: "You guys walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it's the gospel. ... It's not the gospel for me. That's not the way we do things." He added that "our ambassador has been a strong ambassador here." The State Department and its watchdog declined to comment, per NBC.
