An Ohio college town is reeling after police said a well-known Oberlin College art professor was fatally shot by his son. Authorities on Thursday charged 31-year-old Daniel Jones of Ashland, Oregon, with multiple counts of murder and felonious assault in the deaths of his father, 64-year-old Pipo Nguyen-Duy, and stepmother, 56-year-old Tran Thi Phong. Police called the shootings "domestic in nature," Cleveland.com reports. The response began with reports of a smoking vehicle near the Oberlin Conservatory; officers later took Jones into custody and then discovered the two bodies in an Oberlin home, both with multiple gunshot wounds.
Nguyen-Duy, a Vietnamese refugee who'd taught photography at Oberlin since 1998 and was a Guggenheim Fellow, was described by the college president as beloved. Authorities said Jones, who says he goes by the name Asia Nguyen-Duy, had knocked on the door of a resident earlier and asked her to record a video to go online, per NBC News. In it, he talked about escaping a cult, the prosecutor said, and added, "Everything I did was on my own accord and I take full responsibility."
