A celebratory trip to Zanzibar has ended in anguish for the family of a New Jersey social media influencer after her mysterious death on the Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa, CBS News reports. Ashly Robinson, known online as Ashlee Jenae, traveled to the island with her boyfriend, Joe McCann, who proposed during the visit as she marked her 31st birthday. Days later, her parents say, they learned from McCann that she was in a hospital—then heard nothing more from him. They next heard from the hotel, informing them their daughter had died. Robinson's mom tells ABC 7 they got the call from McCann on April 8, one day after their daughter called to say the couple had gotten into an argument and moved into separate rooms.
Tanzanian authorities said Tuesday they are questioning McCann and have confiscated his passport pending autopsy results, though they previously told local media he was not a suspect. Robinson's parents say they have not been contacted by police or medical officials and still do not have the full details surrounding her death. An early statement from the family indicated she had been found unconscious in her room and rushed to the hospital, and a hospital report says that McCann claims she hanged herself. Her family is pressing for a thorough and transparent investigation, including a review of resort security footage, and have appealed to the US embassy for help. "We just want transparency," her father said. "We need to know. And we need to get her home," her mother added. People reports Robinson, who created lifestyle content, had more than 88,000 followers.
