23 Hurt in Head-on Pentagon Bus Crash

A rush-hour crash involving two commuter buses near the Pentagon sent more than a dozen people to hospitals Friday morning, authorities said. The Pentagon Force Protection Agency, the federal law enforcement agency at the Pentagon, said the collision between an OmniRide bus and a Fairfax Connector bus occurred around 7:20am at the Pentagon South Parking Lot, USA Today reports. The agency said 23 people were injured, including 10 Pentagon personnel. "First responders transported 18 individuals to local hospitals for further medical evaluation and treatment," the agency said, per Fox News. "Five passengers were treated on site and released on their own recognizance."

Officials have not yet detailed the severity of the injuries or the cause of the crash. Video shows the two buses colliding head-on. Pentagon Police and emergency medical crews from Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax counties responded and closed the Metro Access Road as the investigation continues. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said it has put an alternate bus plan in place to keep commuters moving. The Pentagon Force Protection Agency is leading the investigation, WUSA9 reports.
