Sheriff's deputies turned up early Wednesday at the Arroyo Grande home of Susan Flores, mother of convicted killer Paul Flores, adding a new chapter to the 30-year search for California student Kristin Smart, the New York Post reports. San Luis Obispo County authorities served a search warrant at the property, which the Flores family owned when the Cal Poly freshman vanished over Memorial Day weekend in 1996. Officials said only that the move is part of an ongoing investigation approved by a Superior Court judge. Smart's body has never been found, though Paul Flores was convicted of her murder in 2022 and is serving 25 years to life.
District Attorney Dan Dow said his office and the sheriff's department remain determined to "bring Kristin home" and are using "every lawful tool available." Chris Lambert, the podcaster behind "Your Own Backyard"—which helped crack the case, per the AP—was on scene, and said ground-penetrating radar was used on the driveway and noted the house had never been thoroughly searched. He suggested investigators may be looking for Smart's missing clothing or other evidence tied to the night she disappeared. No details have been released on what, if anything, was seized. Equipment was also seen being taken into a neighboring yard, KSBY reports. Paul Flores was the last person to see Smart alive, while walking her home from a party, and his clothing from that night also remains missing.
