Kyle Rittenhouse is back in the headlines, this time over a spider, People reports. The 23-year-old, acquitted in 2021 of all charges after fatally shooting two men and injuring a third during a protest in Kenosha, Wis., said he was hospitalized this week after what he described as a brown recluse spider bite. He posted a shirtless photo from a hospital bed showing monitoring equipment and markings on his thigh around the alleged bite, the caption reading, "The communists couldn't take me out and I'll be damned if I let a brown recluse take me out." Rittenhouse later shared a hunting photo captioned, "The spider, like the commies, also thought it was a good idea to come after me while I was armed. He did not survive."
Brown recluse spiders, typically found in the south and central US, can cause symptoms ranging from mild discomfort to, in rare cases, serious complications like kidney failure and seizures, per MedlinePlus. Following his posts, Rittenhouse received online well-wishes from conservative figures including Sen. Rand Paul and far-right commentator Jack Posobiec. NBC News reports there were also less-kind comments, including body-shaming ones. One detractor cited by PennLive: "Hey man, I speak for most when I say I hope whatever you're going through gets worse." Rittenhouse, who now works as a firearms instructor for Texas Gun Rights, gave no details on how the bite took place.
