A late-night walk in East Oakland turned deadly for six pedestrians on Saturday when a speeding SUV jumped into their path, killing half of them, KTVU reports. Oakland police say the collision unfolded around 11:15pm near International Boulevard and 85th Avenue, after a vehicle headed north on 85th allegedly took a fast left onto International, slammed into a parked car, then plowed into people on the street.

Three pedestrians died at the scene; three others were taken to hospitals in conditions ranging from critical to stable, according to police. Other outlets, including the San Francisco Chronicle, put the number of injured at five. Witness Cornelius Reed told local media he rushed to help but found the injuries overwhelming, adding that several victims were lifelong friends. Police say the driver, described only as a juvenile, tried to flee on foot but was stopped by bystanders until officers arrived. The teen was hospitalized, then arrested in connection with the crash. Investigators have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were involved, though speeding is believed to have been a factor, CBS News reports. The names of those killed have not been released.
