Air travelers out of Boston may soon clear security long before they actually arrive at the airport. Starting June 1, some morning passengers on Delta and JetBlue can opt to be screened at a new off-site facility in Framingham, about 25 miles from Logan Airport, then ride a secure shuttle that will drop them off beyond the security area—bypassing curb traffic, parking snarls, and Logan's own TSA lines.
The pilot program, dubbed "straight to gate," will see shuttles run from 4am to 11am and cost $9 one way on the Landline-operated coach. WBUR reports the screenings will take place in a "modular building" near Framingham's Logan Express parking lot; those who take advantage can park for $7 a day. In an earlier preview piece on the program, CBS News noted travelers will need to book their "straight to gate" service in advance, which they can do here.
The pilot, which the Wall Street Journal reports Congress approved funding for in 2019, is part of a broader TSA effort to move screening beyond airport walls. TSA agents will handle security checks in Framingham; Landline staff will manage check-in and bags, which airline employees will transfer upon arrival at Logan. Officials say the approach could eventually extend to cruise terminals or even Walt Disney World. "You can only do so much to build a bigger front door at these airports," said Landline CEO David Sunde. "At some point, you have to think about how you can make more front doors."
