President Trump says the fighting in Lebanon is coming to a halt—at least for now. In a Monday post on Truth Social, the president said Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to halt fire after he spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hezbollah "through highly placed Representatives." Israel agreed "there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back," and Hezbollah "agreed that all shooting will stop" and that "Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel," Trump wrote. A source tells the Wall Street Journal that after Trump's call with Netanyahu, Israel is not planning to attack Beirut.

Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon and Hezbollah attacks on Israeli troops in the area, however, continued Monday evening, Reuters reports. Trump's announcement came amid fraught negotiations to end the US war with Iran, where Lebanon has become a key bargaining chip. Tehran is seeking a long-term ceasefire there, the unfreezing of its overseas assets, and continued sway over the Strait of Hormuz as part of any final deal. Over the weekend, US and Iranian forces traded strikes on radar, drone, and missile targets, and Israeli forces pushed deeper into Lebanon.

Iranian media reported earlier Monday that Tehran had halted talks with the US because of Israel's continued campaign in Lebanon. But in a Truth Social post after the Lebanon announcement, Trump said discussions with Iran were moving "at a rapid pace." In a post early Monday morning, Trump said Iran "really wants to make a deal" and slammed critics from both parties for "chirping." He added: "Just sit back and relax, it will all work out well in the end - It always does!"
